The Wallpaper* Handmade sketchbook
Lunch box by Tomas Kral
From early-doors doodles to complex computer modelling, sketches, diagrams and renders are how designer and maker talk to each other. They can have their own language, dialects, speech patterns, even slurs and stutters. They can be elegant and elaborate, things of beauty in themselves, elliptical or plain spoken. They are also sometimes designers talking to themselves, thinking aloud. Either way, they are part of a conversation worth listening in on

‘Volkswagen Volcado, 1975’ by Enrique Metinides
One of the powerful Mexican shows at this year’s Les Rencontres d'Arles is an overview of Enrique Metinides’ work, in tandem with new book of his photographs, titled 'Series’, published by Kominek. For years a staff photographer on the Mexican tabloid La Prensa, Metinedes often rode to crime scenes with fire and ambulance crews and created strikingly composed images of car crashes, suicides and accident victims before the blood had stopped running. Whilst his work has been exhibited and lauded for many years now, it still doesn’t diminish the power of some of his images, however grisly the subject matter, and the image of the skewered body of actress Adela Legarreta Rivas is one of the most powerful, haunting images on show in the whole festival
Famous for 15 Years: The Wallpaper* 150
September marks not only our 150th issue, but also 15 years of Wallpaper*. To help us celebrate, we’re taking a trip back over our prestigious past to collate the W*150: a list of the 150 people who have most influenced, inspired and improved the way we live, work and travel over the last 15 years.
The debates of who’s in, and who’s out, are well under way here at W* HQ, where we have set a few rules: the people have to be alive, and their era-defining moment has to have been within the last 15 years, not before. However, this is too enthralling a contest to keep to ourselves. Over the coming weeks we’ll be previewing who’s made our list, and as well as your comments, we’d love to hear the people you think most deserve a place in our line-up. The final W*150 will be revealed in the magazine’s print and iPad editions on 11th August, but until then, we’re all ears - just remember to include the tag #W150 in your tweets.
