“I created the following images (and many more) in 1974-1976 using a Rand Tablet and FORTRAN IV software I wrote that, at the time, I called “a drawing program”. The same software would now be called “a paint program” because, in the 1980s, the word “drawing” came to be construed as refering to vector, rather than raster, image creation software.
I hope you will be able to imagine these images not as the small darkish snapshots presented here, hastily digitized from small darkish photograph prints, but as the glowing images that filled the cathode ray screen on which they were created, to picture them in your minds the way I saw them when they were still the first output from software I was still actively writing that permitted a person to experience of drawing directly to a luminescent display screen when this was not yet a common experience.“- Laurie Spiegel

Les Objets à Réaction Poetique
1931–6
A collaboration between designer Charlotte Perriand, architect Pierre Jeanneret and painter Fernand Léger. Taken using the portable Rolleiflex camera, the series consists of 25 square format black and white photographs documenting one of the many walks they took together, capturing various organic forms and “surrealist” found objects along the way. Interspersed among these are images of the artists holding a melting block of ice up to the sun which add a very performative and temporal quality to the series. It is particularly interesting to see three artists working with a medium that wasn’t a primary part of their practices.

Teeny Duchamp, Marcel Duchamp et John Cage au Ryerson Institute de Toronto, le 5 mars 1968
John Cage (1912-1992) était un passionné d'échecs. Alors que dans ses compositions, il se fiait au hasard, aux échecs par contre, il était fasciné par la prévisibilité. En 1968, il a joué avec son ami Marcel Duchamp, champion de Haute-Normandie en 1924, une partie d'échecs. L'échiquier utilisé lors de cette « Reunion », construit par Lowell Cross, compositeur d'oeuvres électro-acoustiques et multimédia, ingénieur et constructeur d'instruments, possédait des contacts électroniques qui, lors de chaque mouvement, modifiaient la structure sonore d'un morceau de musique relié ou déclenchaient la projection d'une diapo. A la fin de la performance il ne restait plus personne dans la salle.
